Women’s History Month: Advocating for Health & Equity

March is Women’s History Month—a time to celebrate the strength, resilience, and achievements of women!

For generations, Latina women have been at the forefront of change, shaping the future of healthcare, justice, and equality. Their determination has opened doors, ensuring that more women have access to the care and resources they need.

Take Dr. Helen Rodríguez Trías, for example. Her relentless advocacy for reproductive rights and maternal care transformed healthcare policies, creating progress for Latinas. Or Dr. Martha Bernal, who broke barriers in psychology to ensure communities of color had access to mental health services that understood and respected their needs. Because of women like them, more women have access to lifesaving healthcare—but the work isn’t done yet.

Despite their progress, many Latinas still face challenges when it comes to healthcare access, including preventive screenings and essential resources. The question isn’t whether we can continue their fight—it’s how.

One way is by making prevention a priority. That’s why, for the past seven years, we’ve partnered with Methodist Hospital to provide free mammograms to women in our community. Early detection saves lives, and our mammogram clinic ensures that cost isn’t a barrier to care.

But good health isn’t just about screenings—it’s about knowledge, empowerment, and community. That’s where Un Día Para Tí Mujer comes in. This annual Women’s Health Conference brings Latinas together to connect, learn, and grow. With expert-led sessions on mental health, nutrition, fitness, and preventive care, women leave feeling ready to prioritize their well-being.

Honoring the women who paved the way means continuing their fight—not just in words, but in action. Let’s celebrate Women’s History Month by investing in our health and ensuring that every woman has access to the care she deserves.
