Healthy Communities in Action: Transforming Lives Through the Power of Prevention

The Latino Center’s Healthy Communities team is gearing up for a year full of impactful programming designed to improve the health and well-being of our community. Our mission is to create sustainable health programming that fosters awareness, educates and supports the health and wellness of our Latino and immigrant community. This year, we are hosting several dynamic events to help the community protect their health, empower them with knowledge, and life-saving skills!

We believe that health is the foundation of a thriving community. That is why, in partnership with One World, we host vaccine clinics that eliminate barriers and make staying up-to-date on vaccinations simple and accessible. In 2024, 43 community members took the initiative to protect their health through these clinics, inspiring us to expand our reach even further this year!

Protecting one’s health goes beyond vaccinations—it includes embracing preventative measures to maintain long-term wellness. We are excited to continue our 7-year partnership with Methodist Hospital, by providing free mammograms to women in our community as part of our ongoing commitment to their health. Last year, 87 women who faced barriers such as low income or undocumented status—accessed this vital health service, benefiting from early detection and critical support!

While preventative care like screenings and vaccinations are essential, being prepared to respond during a health emergency is equally vital. Our CPR classes, taught in Spanish by an instructor certified through the American Heart Association, equip community members with the confidence to act in critical moments. In 2024, 64 individuals took the initiative to gain these essential skills!

The journey toward better health and well-being doesn’t stop there. Our women’s health conference, Un Día Para Tí Mujer, provides an inspiring space for Latina women of all ages to connect, learn, and grow. Last year, 49 women explored topics on mental health, nutrition, fitness, and preventative care through dynamic sessions led by expert speakers.

These initiatives reflect the commitment shared between the Latino Center, partners, donors, and supporters to build a stronger, healthier, and empowered community, one step at a time.
