Key 2024 Election Dates in Nebraska

  • September 13, 2024 – Last day for for the Secretary of State to certify candidates, offices, and issues to be placed on the statewide ballot.
  • September 30, 2024 – Deadline for election officials to have early mail-in ballots ready for delivery by mail.
  • October 7, 2024 – First day for in-person early voting at the count.
  • October 18, 2024 – Last day to register online in time to vote in the Nov. 5 general election.
  • October 25, 2024 – Last day to register in person in time to vote in the Nov. 5 general election.
  • November 4, 2024 – Last day to vote early in person in the November 5th general election.
  • November 5, 2024 – General Election day

Voter Qualifications

  • Must be 18 years old.
  • Must be a resident of Nebraska and of the county where you are registering. If you move to another county, you must re-register.
  • Must be a United States citizen in order to register to vote.
  • If you have been convicted of a felony, either in Nebraska or another state or in federal court, you cannot register to vote until your civil rights have been restored.
  • If you have been found by a court to be mentally incompetent, you cannot register to vote.

Voter ID Information

On June 1, 2023, the Governor signed into law LB514, which establishes voter identification (ID) requirements for elections in Nebraska.

Voters can get a free state ID for voting purposes at the Nebraska DMV. They will need to bring documents confirming their identity and their address when applying for a state ID.

If a voter has a reasonable impediment that prevents them from obtaining a photo ID, they can complete a Reasonable Impediment Certification

What is a reasonable impediment certification?

  • Inability to obtain an acceptable form of ID due to:
    • Disability or illness that prevents the voter from obtaining valid photographic identification
    • Lack of birth certificate or other required documents and an inability to obtain a birth certificate or other required documents without significant difficulty or expense
  • Religious objection to being photographed

How to request a reasonable impediment certification

  • Certifications must be physically signed and cannot be signed by an agent. Your signature on this reasonable impediment certification will be matched to your signature on your voter registration record.
  • You can take a picture or scan your reasonable impediment certification and mail, fax, or email it to your county election official.
  • Your county election official will verify that you do not have a current, unexpired Nebraska driver’s license or Nebraska state identification card.

Vote by Mail Information

Nebraska voters are able to request a mail-in ballot by filing out an application found online or by contacting their County Election Commissioner or County Clerk.

How to Request a Mail-in Ballot

  • Contact your county election office by mail or fax for an early-voting ballot
  • Print an online early voting application, complete the form, and then mail, fax or scan/take a picture of your application and email it to your county election office.
  • Remember to write your driver’s license/state ID number on the application or attach a copy of an acceptable form of photo ID or reasonable impediment certification.

Time Frame for Voting by Mail

  • April 6 marks the first day for counties to mail ballots requested by voters.
  • May 1 is the last day for voters to request a mail-in ballot to be mailed to them.
  • Ballots must be received in the county election office by close of primary election polls on May 12.
  • The last day for an early-voting application to be received is 6 p.m. on the second Friday preceding the election.

Sample ballots are published on the Election Commission website approximately five weeks prior to statewide primary or general elections and approximately two weeks prior to special elections.

Early Voting Information

Nebraska is a “no-excuse” state, meaning any registered voter may request an early-voting (absentee) ballot, and is not required to provide a reason.

How to Apply

  • You can apply for an early-voting ballot by contacting your county election office by mail or by fax. 
  • You can print an online early voting application, complete the form, and then mail, fax or scan/take a picture of your application and email it to your county election office. 
  • Remember to write your driver’s license/state ID number on the application or attach a copy of an acceptable form of photo ID or reasonable impediment certification. 
  • The last day for an early-voting application to be received is 6 p.m. on the second Friday preceding the election.

Time Frame for Voting

  • All county election offices will accept early-voting applications up to 120 days prior to a statewide primary, general election or special election. 
  • Regular early-voting ballots are not sent out or voted until at least 35 days before a primary or general election and 15 days prior to all other elections. 
  • All early-voting ballots whether delivered in person or carrier to the county drop box or by mail must arrive by the close of polls on the day of the election.
  • You can vote early in-person at your county election office 30 days prior to a primary or general election and 15 days for all other elections. The day before the election is the last day to vote early in person.
